[PHOTOS] China vs Cyprus: Zhang Chenglong, Panicos Yusuf fight at ‘ONE: Warriors of Light’ in Thailand

China and Cyprus were among the 15 countries represented at “ONE: Warriors of Light.” It was the second ONE Championship event in 2019 held in Thailand.

Featuring three kickboxing contests, four Muay Thai matches and five mixed martial arts bouts, “ONE: Warriors of Light” took place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on May 10, 2019. The seventh bout of the evening was between “Muay Thai Boy” Zhang Chenglong, 21, of China and Panicos Yusuf, 33, of Limassol, Cyprus.

While Zhang was one of the two fighters who represented China at “ONE: Warriors of Light,” Yusuf was one of the two representatives of Cyprus. Algeria, Australia, Cambodia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Portugal, Thailand and the United States were also represented.

A martial artist of Cypriot and Filipino descent, Yusuf moved to Manchester, England in 2005 to be with his wife and opened his own gym there named All Powers Gym. “ONE: Warriors of Light” marked his fourth ONE Super Series bout.

After defeating Han Zi Hao, 23, of China at “ONE: Reign of Kings” in Philippines on July 27, 2018, Yusuf lost to Muangthai P.K.Saenchaimuaythaigym of Thailand at “ONE: Heart of the Lion” in Singapore on November 9, 2018. The Cypriot-Filipino martial artist defeated Mohammed “Jordan Boy” Bin Mahmoud, 22, of Malaysia at “ONE: A New Era” in Japan on March 31, 2019.

Born in Beijing, China on October 17, 1997, Zhang started his Muay Thai training when he was 13 years old. Training out of Shengli Fight Club, he is a Top King Muay Thai World Champion and held the MAX Muaythai 63kg Silver Belt in 2016 and the Glory Featherweight Qualification Tournament Championship title in 2017.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” marked Zhang’s second ONE Super Series bout. On February 22, 2019, he defeated Kong “Little White Dragon” Sambo, 23, of Cambodia  at “ONE: Call to Greatness” in Singapore.

Fight Result

Zhang and Yusuf competed in an kickboxing match in the bantamweight division. Elias Dolaptsis served as the referee.

After three three-minute rounds, the bantamweight contest was left in the hands of the judges. In the end, Dolaptsis raised the hand of Zhang, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “ONE: Warriors of Light” improved the professional kickboxing record of Zhang to 48 wins, 12 losses and 1 draw. On the other hand, Yusuf now has 38 wins and 8 losses.

“ONE: Warriors of Light” Main Events

Petchdam Petchyindee Academy, 20, of Thailand and Elias “The Sniper” Mahmoudi, 21, of Algeria competed for the inaugural ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Championship in the co-main event. The Thai contender won via technical decision after an accidental groin attack in the fourth round.

Hiroaki “Kaibutsukun” Suzuki, 34, of Japan challenged reigning ONE Bantamweight Muay Thai World Champion Nong-o Gaiyanghadao, 32, of Thailand in the main event. The Thai defending champion won via unanimous decision.

The official open workout for “ONE: Warriors of Light” took place in Bangkok on April 25, 2019. It featured NongO and Petchdam along with their fellow Thai ONE Championship athletes “The Iron Man” Rodtang Jitmuangnon, 21, Singtongnoi Por Telakun, 38, Superlek Kiatmoo9, 23, and Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit, 22.

[PHOTOS] Cyprus vs Malaysia: Panicos Yusuf, Mohammed Bin Mahmoud fight at ‘ONE: A New Era’ in Tokyo, Japan

Cyprus and Malaysia were among the 19 countries represented at “ONE: A New Era” at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan on March 31, 2019. It was the first ever ONE Championship event to take place in the country.

“ONE: A New Era” featured 11 mixed martial arts bouts and four ONE Super Series matches, which include two kickboxing contests and two Muay Thai contests. In the second bout of the evening, Panicos Yusuf, 33, of Cyprus faced Mohammed “Jordan Boy” Bin Mahmoud, 22, of Malaysia.

Yusuf was the only fighter from Cyprus on the “ONE: A New Era” card. Mahmoud solely represented Malaysia, as well.

Mahmoud is training out of Sampuri Muay Thai Gym Ampang. When he made his ONE Super Series debut at “ONE: Destiny of Champions” on December 7, 2018 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, he defeated Stergos “Greek Dynamite” Mikkios, 28, of Greece and the United States.

On January 25, 2019, Mahmoud lost to Hiroaki “Kaibutsukun” Suzuki, 34, of Japan at “ONE: Hero’s Ascent” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines. “ONE: A New Era” marked the Malaysian fighter’s third ONE Super Series bout.

Cyrpus and Thailand will be represented at “ONE: Heart of the Lion,” a ONE Championship event taking place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on November 9, 2018. In the sixth bout of the evening, Panicos Yusuf, 33, of Cyprus will face Muangthai P.K.Saenchai Muaythaigym of Thailand.

“ONE: Heart of the Lion” will feature 14 matches, which include nine mixed martial arts bouts and five ONE Super Series contests. The striking contests include three Muay Thai fights, one kickboxing bout and one sanda contest.

One of the Muay Thai fights is between Yusuf and Muangthai. They will compete in the bantamweight division.

Yusuf is the only fighter representing Cyprus at “ONE: Heart of the Lion.” He is of Cypriot and Filipino descent.

The Filipino-Cypriot martial artist made his ONE Super Series debut at “ONE: Reign of Kings” at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, Metro Manila, Philippines on July 27, 2018. He defeated Han Zi Hao, 23, of China via unanimous decision in a Muay Thai bantamweight bout.

On the other hand, Muangthai is one of the five Thai fighters competing at “ONE: Heart of the Lion.” The other four are Jo Nattawut, Yodlekpet T-Ded 99, Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke and Sorgraw Petchyindee Academy.

In the co-main event of “ONE: Heart of the Lion,” Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 30, of Singapore and Kazuki Tokudome, 31, of Tokyo, Japan will compete in an MMA match in a catch weight of 73 kg. In the main event, reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, 38, of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil will defend his title against ONE Interim Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, 30, of Kiangan, Ifugao, Philippines.

The bantamweight title unification bout will be a rematch between Fernandes and Belingon. Here is the full “ONE: Heart of the Lion” fight card:
