The United States and Japan were among the seven countries represented at “Bellator 222.” Bellator MMA held the mixed martial arts even in Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York, United States on June 14, 2019.

“Bellator 222” featured 18 MMA matches. The 13th bout of the evening was the cross-promotional rematch between reigning Bellator Bantamweight World Champion Darrion “The Wolf” Caldwell, 31, of Redlands, California, USA and reigning RIZIN Bantamweight champion Kyoji “The Supernova” Horiguchi, 28, of Takasaki, Gunma, Japan.

Caldwell was one of the 28 fighters who represented the U.S. at “Bellator 222” while Horiguchi was one of the two representatives of Japan. Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Israel and Peru were also represented.

The official “Bellator 222” weigh-ins took place at the Bellator host hotel in New York. Caldwell and Horiguchi weighed 134.6 lbs and 134.4 lbs, respectively.

Born in Takasaki on October 12, 1990, Horiguchi started his karate training when he was 5 years old. As an MMA fighter, he has been competing professionally since 2010.

“Bellator 222” was the first Bellator MMA fighter of Horiguchi, who is currently signed in Rizin Fighting Federation. He competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship from 2013 to 2016.

Red Corner

Born in Rahway, New Jersey, USA on December 19, 1987, Caldwell competed in wrestling at Rahway High School and North Carolina State University. As an MMA fighter, he has been competing professionally since 2012.

“Bellator 222” marked Caldwell’s 12th Bellator MMA fight. He has been reigning as the Bellator Bantamweight World Champion since October 6, 2017.

“Rizin 14,” which took place on December 31, 2018, marked the first time Caldwell and Horiguchi faced it each other. The Japanese contender submitted his American opponent.

Todd Anderson served as the referee of Caldwell and Horiguchi’s rematch at “Bellator 222.” After five five-minute rounds, the Bellator Bantamweight World Championship bout was left in the hands of the three judges.

One judge scored the bout 48-47 while both of the other two judges scored it 49-46. In the end, Anderson raised the hand of Horiguchi, who was declared the winner via unanimous decision.

Winning at “Bellator 222” improved the professional MMA record of Horiguchi to 28 wins and 2 losses. On the other hand, Caldwell now has 13 wins and 3 losses.

Neiman Gracie, 30, of Brazil challenged reigning Bellator Welterweight World Champion Rory “Red King” MacDonald, 29, of Canada in the main event, which was also a Bellator Welterweight World Grand Prix semi-final bout. The defending champion won via unanimous decision.

“Bellator 222” featured 18 MMA matches. The fifth bout of the evening was between Haim “Batman” Gozali, 46, of Bat Yam, Israel and Gustavo “Show Man” Wurlitzer, 36, of Curitiba, Parana, Brazil.

Gozali solely represented Israel at “Bellator 222” while Wurlitzer was one of the four representatives of Brazil. Canada, Hungary, Japan, Peru and the U.S. were also represented.

The official “Bellator 222” weigh-ins took place at the Bellator host hotel in New York. Gozali and Wurlitzer weighed 178 lbs and 176 lbs, respectively.

Born in Brazil on March 25, 1983, Wurlitzer went to Colégio da Polícia Militar do Paraná in Curitiba. As an MMA fighter, he has been competing professionally since 2002.

Wurlitzer made his Bellator MMA debut at “Bellator 222.” He previously competed at Circuito Talent MMA, Imortal Fight Championship and Adventure Fighters Tournament, among others.

Gozali was born in Bat Yam on May 6, 1973. Training out of Renzo Gracie Israel in Bat Yam, he is a black belt in karate and ninjutsu and a 4th degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

“Bellator 222” marked Gozali’s sixth Bellator MMA fight. He has been competing professionally since 1998.
