ONE Championship, Nielsen Sports’ What’s Next in Global Sports 2019 to feature Michael Phelps, ‘ONE: Enter the Dragon’ in Singapore

On April 24, 2019, Nielsen Sports and ONE Championship announced that “Nielsen Presents: What’s Next in Global Sports” will take place in Singapore on May 16-17, 2019. The second annual thought leadership event will feature retired Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, 33, as a closing keynote speaker and “ONE: Enter the Dragon” as the culminating event.

“Nielsen Presents: What’s Next in Global Sports” will bring together the world’s leading brands, sports rights holders, agencies and broadcasters to discuss the top trends driving the global sports market and explore how companies are leveraging data-driven decision making to monetize fan engagement. Executives from Google, PGL Sports, Holcim Philippines and Great Sports, among others, will hit the stage to identify new strategies for global expansion of sports properties, sustainable revenue opportunities in sports and share how they are using data to make smarter decisions around media rights and sponsorships.

At the event, subject matter experts from across the global sports ecosystem will take part in panel discussions including:

  • Dollars and Sense: Turning the Passion for Sports into Concrete Revenue-generating Opportunities
  • Thinking Global, Acting Local: Navigating the Local In’s and Out’s to Achieve Global Success and Relevance

“A perfect example of the globalization of sports is what we’re now seeing with Asian brands and rights holders who are increasing investments to gain recognition on the world sporting stage,” Nielsen Sports Asia Pacific, Africa and Middle East managing director Kelvin Watt stated. “This collaboration with ONE Championship is important to continue to spotlight the rise of Asia and help regional brands unlock and monetize global opportunities.”

On May 16, 2019, “Nielsen Presents: What’s Next in Global Sports” will kick off with a welcome gala dinner at the iconic Gardens by the Bay in Singapore. It will be followed by the “Sports Business Conference” at the world-renowned Marina Bay Sands on May 17, 2019.

The two-day extravaganza will culminate with the ONE Championship event “ONE: Enter the Dragon” at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. It will be headlined by reigning ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki, 35, of Japan and his challenger Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 20, of Singapore.

USA vs South Korea: Garry Tonon, Sung Jong Lee to fight at ‘ONE: Heart of the Lion’ in Singapore

The United States and South Korea will be represented at “ONE: Heart of the Lion,” a ONE Championship event taking place at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore on November 9, 2018. In the sixth bout of the evening, Garry “The Lion Killer” Tonon, 26, of New Jersey, United States will face Sung Jong Lee, 33, of Cheonan, South Korea.

Tonon is a multiple-time No Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu World Champion who began his martial arts career as a wrestler, competing extensively throughout grade school. He was introduced to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at age 14, enrolling at Tom DeBlass’s Ocean County BJJ and became one of his most dedicated students.

In 2008, Tonon won his first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world title in the juvenile blue belt division. In 2018, he made a successful professional mixed martial arts debut by knocking out Richard “Lion Heart” Corminal, 36, of the Philippines and Malaysia.

Having won multiple tournaments across the globe, Tonon is one of the world’s most decorated grapplers today. He is a former International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation World Champion, a two-time IBJJF World No-Gi Champion and a four-time Eddie Bravo Invitational Champion.

On the other hand, Lee is a former NAGA No Gi Grappling Champion who holds a professional MMA record of 4 wins and 2 losses. Always looking to finish on the mat, he is a dangerous grappler who is capable of ending matches in a variety of ways.

“ONE: Heart of the Lion” marks Lee’s second professional MMA bout in Singapore. The Cheonan native made his ONE Championship debut on May 18, 2018 in the country where he lost to local hero Amir Khan, 23.

In the co-main event of “ONE: Heart of the Lion,” Christian “The Warrior” Lee, 30, of Singapore and Kazuki Tokudome, 31, of Tokyo, Japan will compete in an MMA match in a catch weight of 73 kg. In the main event, reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes, 38, of Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil will defend his title against ONE Interim Bantamweight World Champion Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon, 30, of Kiangan, Ifugao, Philippines.

The bantamweight title unification bout will be a rematch between Fernandes and Belingon. Here is the full “ONE: Heart of the Lion” fight card:
